Each year the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) recognizes volunteers who have completed their fifth and tenth years as part of the Citizen Stream Monitoring Program. These volunteers collect valuable data on the transparency of our rivers and streams that plays a vital role in their assessment and understanding trends. CRWP works with this program and volunteers as well. Some of these volunteers have gone on to participate in sample collection through our Surface Water Assessment projects.
Those being recongized include:
Robert Nicholson, Spring Creek in Rice County
Patrick O'Connor, Cannon River in Rice County
David Velasquez, Cannon River in Goodhue County
Sincere thanks to Bob, Patrick and David and to all our other citizen monitors!

Thanks to all who attended CRWP’s Dragonfly Walk on Saturday, June 5th and especially to Scott King for leading our group. The Skoglund Pond at St. Olaf is a hotbed for dragonfly activity. The weather took pity on us and gave us some limited sunshine for an hour which was just enough time to see some beautiful dragonflies and damselflies along with some toads and aquatic invertebrates. These creatures are important indicators of water quality. Until recently, very little was known about the populations in the watershed. The Minnesota Odonata Survey Project (MOSP), http://www.mndragonfly.org, is trying to remedy this lack of knowledge. We learned that in the past three years the number of recorded dragonfly species in Rice County has grown from 5 to 55 through the efforts of this project.
There will be more dragonfly hunting fun on Saturday, August 28th when Kurt Mead will offer a full-day MOSP workshop at River Bend Nature Center in Faribault. In the mean time, take a look at these great drangonfly resources: Dragonflies of the North Woods by Kurt Mead and Damselflies of the North Woods by Bob DuBois.
